Axis Deer (Axis axis)![]()
The axis deer has become one of the most common exotics on Texas ranches since being introduced from zoo stock in the 1930s. In its native India, this moderately large, spotted deer is also known as the “chital” or spotted deer. The axis deer is characterized by three-tined antlers and well-defined spots on a rich red-brown coat. They have been noted to bark or “yip” when excited and are good swimmers. Bucks typically weigh 190 lbs., while does average 115 lbs. The deer’s average lifespan is 9 to 13 years. The axis deer breeds easily on ranches and requires very little special care, making it an ideal exotic for some ranchers. Its meat is low in fat, calories, and cholesterol, and some exotic-meat dealers are hopeful that it will provide future competition for the beef market. Axis deer are also hunted as trophies, with antlers averaging 22 to 27 inches and “trophies” ranging from 30 to 36 inches.
